Cadets take on the Climbing Challenge
Cpl Craig Neil (15), and Cadets Luke Lister (13), Matthew and Jacob Williams (14), Rebecca Roberts (14), Dean Davies (13) and Levi Stenson-Jones (13) took part in a days climbing, run with the help of Bach Ventures of Waunfawr. The day was arranged to encourage cadets to get out and take advantage of their surroundings, to develop their teamwork and of course, to have a good time.
It all began with a 30 minute walk up the mountain, where they collapsed on the ledge, waiting for the instructor to get the ropes out. They then used 3 ropes to climb up the rock face, with a sheer drop beneath them. Not bad for a group of 13-16 year olds!
After climbing higher, the cadets tried their hand at bouldering; climbing along the rocks without any ropes. Bouldering is used to develop arm strength, and increases the agility of climbers in difficult places. Cadet Dean Davies said he enjoyed the challenges at the bouldering stage as it provided something completely different.
The scariest part of the day, according to Cadet Luke Lister, was the abseiling at the end. "I couldn't do it, the drop was so far" Lister did enjoy the rest of the day and hopes to go again as soon as possible!
Doing all of these activities cost only £5 per cadet, as the squadron aims to provide subsidised activities to the young cadets.
